In order to promote the creation of world class universities that are internationally competitive, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) has selected programs in different academic fields that aim to develop global research and education sites, and is creating '21st Century COE (Centers of Excellence)' to provide these programs with focused support.
The 'Center for Aquaculture Science and Technology for
Bluefin Tuna and Other Cultivated Fish' proposed by
the Fisheries Laboratory of Kinki University and the
Graduate School of Agriculture was selected for one
of these COE programs in the field of 'interdisciplinary,
combined fields, new disciplines', one of the five fields
announced for FY2003.

Our COE Leader, Hidemi Kumai is going to be awarded the Japan Prize for Agricultural Sciences with respect to 'Research on 'Complete Culture of Bluefin Tuna'.
The Association of Japanese Agricultural Scientific Societies consists of approximately 50 academic societies which research on agricultural science, forestry, fisheries, animal medicine, biological production, bioenvironment, social science, biotechnology and other subjects, and therefore the Japan Prize for Agricultural Science awarded by the association is regarded as the greatest honor.
In addition to the research result that we've achieved complete culture in 2002, the researches on the production and shipment of the completely cultured second generation, that is, the industrialization of artificially hatched bluefin tuna, and the education and training for young researchers participating in such research activities also contributed to the prize.
For more information, please see the Web sites of the Association of Japanese Agricultural Science and the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science. |
